Pumps 101 – Operations and Maintenance
Pumps 101 – Operations and Maintenance
(8 Hours) Designed for those with limited to no experience with pumps
Course Description
This one day course is built around hands-on learning and real-world pump work. Students will gain practical experience working directly with pumps while developing a solid understanding of pump fundamentals. Participants will learn to identify common pump types and understand the basic operating principles behind each. Proper safety procedures for removing a pump from service will be covered, followed by a guided demonstration on pump disassembly and component identification. Each student will then disassemble a pump themselves to reinforce learning. The course covers how to inspect components and identify worn or damaged parts, along with best practices for proper pump reassembly. Installation and startup procedures will be discussed, including hands-on exercises for setting correct impeller clearance. Students will also be introduced to mechanical seal fundamentals, including proper seal handling and installation techniques. Emphasis is placed on correct installation, as improper seal installation is a leading cause of premature seal failure. By the end of the course, attendees will be able to: -Safely remove a pump from service -Disassemble and inspect pump components -Identify parts requiring replacement -Properly reassemble, reinstall, and start up a pump -Perform basic mechanical seal installation with confidence The goal of Pumps 101 is for attendees to leave with the knowledge and confidence to rebuild a pump safely and correctly, with minimal guidance, helping improve reliability and reduce downtime in the field.
